The total number of complaints in 2015 showed a 5% decrease from the previous year. From nearly 10 000 short term insurance complaints received for the year, just under 50% were for motor insurance.

At Times, Insurers Intimidate Consumers

The Ombud also noted some worrying trends of unfair treatment towards the consumer. Specifically, in the industry as a whole. There trends were:

  • Policy drafting in unclear language
  • A general lack of consumer understanding of the precise nature of motor cover
  • Unreliable state laboratory tests on legal alcohol limits that were then used to repudiate (reject) car insurance claims
  • Intimidating or aggressive insurance assessors trying to bully people who lodge claims
