In the first of this car comparison series, we take a look at two cars that are regularly seen on the road. In fact, both of these cars are among the most popular brands for South Africans at the moment. Renault, for example, has sold over 20 000 Clios since its launch in South Africa. While over 24 000 Polo’s have hit South African roads since 2014. This is the third largest market for Volkswagen globally. So, what are the biggest differences between the two brands and which car would be best suited to you? We take a look at both features.

Renault decided, at the end of last year, that they would give the popular Clio a bit of a make-over. They released it to the South African market and it was an instant hit. The 2016 has a few aesthetic changes to the car, including a new front bumper and grid, as well as rear skirt. All in all, it is a highly attractive mid-range car that has hit the market with a bang!

Price Range

A brand new, out-of-the-box Clio will go for around R206 900.

  • The engine is a three-cylinder 66kW petrol Turbo engine.
  • Five-speed manual gearbox.
  • 66kW / 140Nm.
  • It reached 100 kms / hr in 12.9 seconds.
  • Its top speed is 178 kms / hr.
  • The fuel rating stands at around 5.5 litres / 100 km.

The interior has been somewhat re-designed, matching the car with its more high-end siblings. The steering wheel has been re-designed and is now leather. The door panels, as well as the gear lever, have also been re-designed.

VW claimed to totally overhaul the Polo for its latest release, and even sent the top management to the launch in South Africa. They insisted that, due to SA being the third biggest market in the world, they needed a presence at the launch. They boasted a brand new Polo to draw VW fans back to the brand.

Price Range

A brand new Trendline, which is the cheapest in this range, will set you back R188 300.

Under The Bonnet

  • It has a four cylinder 66kw Turbo engine.
  • Five-speed manual gearbox.
  • 66kW / 160Nm.
  • 9 litres / 100 km.
  • It reaches 0-100 km/h in 10.8sec.
  • The top speed is given as 184 km/h.

Take a Look Inside

There are a few changes inside the car. The cloth has been updated and the facia has been redesigned. There is a three-spoked steering wheel. There is also chrome accents on the door panels, air vents, and gear shift.

It also comes standard with a state-of the art infotainment system. This features a 12 inch, 2cm colour display, two more rear speakers, CD player, MP3 functionality, SD-card input, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

Extra Features

  • Automatic post-collision braking: a system triggered when a primary collision has been detected.
