The folks over at My Broadband have a nifty Speed Test app which allows you to measure the speed of your internet connection in South Africa. The app offers insight into your download speed, upload speed and latency. They recently put this to the test by checking which smartphone has the best WiFi connection ability.

The app is easy to use and is trusted by telecom companies and IT professionals throughout SA. It is compatible with both Android and iOS users. In Q4 (October, November and December) of 2017, My Broadband conducted over 200,000 WiFi speed tests on iOS and Android app users.

They found that the average download speed over WiFi in South Africa was 11.59Mbps. The results also showed that the average upload speed was 6.99Mbps.

Most WiFi connections in SA are linked to a fixed broadband connection, so these speeds are indeed the average throughout. Unless, of course, you’re still using a Windows phone. In which case the average is 0. Every time.

Let’s have a look at what they found.

Which Smartphone Comes Out On Top?

According to the test conducted by My Broadband, those who use the Google smartphone enjoy the highest broadband speeds through their WiFi connections.

The top results, Google, Blackberry Android and iPhone, come as no surprise. These are high-end handsets and with the price tag, you would expect great connection speeds.

Right at the bottom, Vodafone customers not only have the highest data rates, or data which just goes missing for no reason, but also the weakest connection.

At a dawdling 5.245Mbps, it’s the equivalent of a snail crawling through peanut butter. It’s slower than a one-legged dog on tranquilizers. That’s dial-up modem speed. That’s slower than Takealot’s website on Black Friday. It’s moving at the speed of South Africa’s economic recovery. Or the line at Home Affairs over lunch time. It’s slower than a Cape Town driver.

Okay, that’s all I’ve got.

Google’s New Smartphones

Google needs absolutely no introduction. The tech-giant owns the Android operating system, which is the most popular smartphone OS in the world. Their impressive portfolio includes Gmail, YouTube and of course, the Google Search Engine.

Many people in South Africa aren’t aware of their mobile handsets, though. The most recent addition to their lineup is the pricey Google Pixel 2 XL, which was launched in November last year.

It comes with a 6-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1440 x 2880 pixels at a PPI of 538 pixels per inch. The Pixel 2 XL comes with 4GB of RAM and is powered by 1.9GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor.

It comes with a 12.2MP primary camera at the back and an 8MP front shooter for narcissism. I mean selfies. The phone runs the latest Android, as can be expected, powered by a 3520mAh non removable battery.

Sensors on the phone include Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, Gyroscope and Barometer.

Since launching, the handsets have received several important updates, including access to the “Pixel Visual Core Service.”

One complaint, however, seems to be that that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets have been running a little hot after installing the recent security update. We’re sure this is something Google can figure out, though. Overall, the Pixel range has been critically acclaimed and well-received.

Is the Pixel range available in South Africa? Not officially. You have to get it imported.  Expect to pay upwards of R16,000 for the XL though.
