Rotten Tomatoes reviewed over 100 movies made in 2016 with some surprising results.

For those of you who don’t know, Rotten Tomatoes is an online film review aggregator. It is free for the public to give reviews to both current and old movies, ending in a percentage score.

The site was started in August 1998 and is devoted to not only film reviews, but also industry news and details.

The Top 10 Movies Of 2016

#10 Sing Street

This feel-good Irish musical comedy-drama is a coming of age story about a young man who is transferred to another school when his parents struggle with finances. He meets this mysterious and beautiful rebel girl called Raphina who is an aspiring model and asks her to be in his band’s upcoming music video. The only problem – he has no band.

Out of 161 reviews, Sing Street earned a 97% rating with an average rating of 8.1/10.

#9 Captain America: Civil War

Times have changed and many people now fear the actions of superheroes and the devastation they leave in their wake. The government decides to push for the Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a hero’s actions.

This law causes a rift in The Avengers between Iron Man, who stands with this Act, and Captain America, who feels saving the world is daring enough and the government cannot be relied on to protect the world. The debate escalates into an all-out feud, causing the remaining superheroes to pick a side.

Out of 323 reviews, Captain America: Civil War earned a 90% rating with an average rating of 7.6/10.

#8 Moonlight

This is the story of a young black man and his rough journey from childhood to adulthood in a rough Miami neighbourhood. A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery.

Out of 116 reviews, Moonlight earned a 99% rating with an average rating of 9/10.

#7 Kubo and The Two Strings

This animation is about a young boy named Kubo who lives a quiet life in a small beach village. Until a spirit with an age-old vendetta turns his life upside down. This causes all sorts of havoc as gods and monsters chase Kubo who, in order to survive, must locate a magical suit of armour, worn by his legendary late father, whilst battling gods and monsters. Only the suit will help him defeat the evil spirit.

Out of 168 reviews, Kubo and the Two Strings earned a 97% rating with an average rating of 8.4/10.

#6 Hunt For The Wilderpeople

Based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. The film stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison act as a father figure and son who become caught in a nationwide manhunt.

Out of 146 reviews, Hunter and the Wilderpeople earned a 98% rating with an average rating of 7.9/10.

#5 Finding Dory

A crowd favourite, Finding Dory was indeed one of the most anticipated films of 2016 for both children and adults alike. The lovable Dory is a blue tang fish with a 10-second memory. One of the few things she can remember is being separated from her parents as a child.

She sets out to find them with the help of her friends Nemo and Marlin.

Out of 250 reviews, Finding Dory earned a 94% rating with an average rating of 7.7/10.

#4 Love & Friendship

Based on Jane Austen’s epistolary novel Lady Susan, but with a comedic twist, the film follows the exploits of the wry and calculating Lady Susan. This as she pursues the wealthy and hapless Sir James for a marriage originally intended for her daughter, but who she marries for the purposes of money.

Out of 158 reviews, Love & Friendship earned a 98% rating with an average rating of 8.3/10.

#3 The Jungle Book

Mowgli was raised by a family of wolves, since birth, but must leave the only home he’s ever known when the fearsome tiger Shere Khan sets out to kill him. He is helped by a no-nonsense panther as well as a free-spirited bear.

He meets all sorts of jungle animals and learns valuable life lessons along his journey of self-discovery.

#2 Hell or High Water

A divorced father tries to make a better life for his son with the help of his ex-convict brother. The duo plan a series of heists against the bank who wants to foreclose their ranch.  They prepare for a showdown against a Texas ranger and lawman who is not ready to retire just yet.

This movie has enjoyed a runaway success since it’s release. As the opening line of the trailer goes, “In the world of Zootopia, humans never happened. Which makes Zootopia, a modern and civilised world that is entirely animal”.

From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. Judy Hopps is the first rabbit in the police force and learns the hard truth of upholding the law. She is determined to prove herself and takes on a mysterious case which is further befuddled by a wily fox called Nick Wilde.
