BREAKING: Toyota Recalls Over 700 000 SA Vehicles

Toyota, has announced that they are recalling over 700 000 vehicles country wide. Find out if your vehicle is on the list.
Toyota SA announced on Thursday that they would be recalling over 700 000 vehicles. This recall would span across ten different vehicle models. This recall affects vehicles manufactured over 15 years ago. The vehicle manufacturing giant announced that the recall was due to airbag safety concerns. According to Toyota, it is a global recall which will affect over 100 million vehicles world wide.

Airbag Safety Concerns

Toyota SA has issued the recall of Takata parts for the front airbag inflators. Tests found that the airbags have the potential for moisture intrusion over time. According to a statement by the company;
"Depending on the circumstances, this could create excessive internal pressure when the airbag is deployed and cause the inflator to rupture. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, striking and possibly injuring the occupants in the event of an accident."
Toyota SA has confirmed that although there is a recall, there haven't been any injuries or fatalities. They have also said that ten different vehicle models have been affected by the recall, including the Lexus.

Will My Car Be Recalled?

According to Toyota, the dealership will contact any vehicle owners affected by the recall.
"Affected owners will be notified by a Toyota dealer to bring their vehicle in for the service action. Please note that the replacement of the component will take one to two hours at no cost to the owner."
Owners of the following vehicles may be affected:
  • Hilux, Rav4 and Fortuners manufactured between July 2003 to December 2005;
  • Yaris, RunX and Corolla vehicles manufactured between 2002 and 2007.
Toyota has also said that vehicle owners can also check their vehicle themselves. An owner can enter their VIN number into far right box on the Toyota website. The VIN number can be found on the vehicle licence disc. Alternatively, customers can contact Toyota Call Centre on 0800 139 111.

Is The First Time?

This is not the first time that Toyota has made a global recall on some of their vehicles. In 2016, Toyota recalled over 5.8 million vehicles this was because of the same problem. The vehicle manufacturer found that the Japanese part firm's, Takata, airbags were potentially faulty. According to BBC;
"Toyota said it was calling back 1.47 million airbags in cars sold in Europe, 1.16 million in Japan, 820,000 in China, and 2.35 million in other regions excluding the US."
Takata has forced over 12 car makers to recall vehicles due to faulty airbag parts. BBC also reported that there have been a report of 16 deaths world wide due to faulty Takata airbags.
