Statistics Of Hijackings In South Africa

The survey showed car hijackings had increased by 14.3%, whilst theft out of motor vehicles had decreased. Truck jacking had decreased in seven of the nine provinces, excluding Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. SAPS recorded over 14 600 reported car hijackings between 2015 and 2016, up from 12 770 cases in the prior period. This means 40 cars are hijacked every day in South Africa (35 in 2015), or roughly one car hijack every 36 minutes. Gauteng is still the number one car and truck jacking hotspot. Gauteng is South Africa’s most populated province and accounts for just over half (50.5%) of all reported car hijackings with 7 376 cases each year. Truck jackings are also at their highest in Gauteng with 58% or 695 cases. Car Insurance Comparison(2)
