Sony’s Playstation 4 is one of the best selling gaming consoles in history. And, with good reason. Playstation has become the best gaming console for many gamers the world over. Thanks to its design, usability, and the sheer number of gaming exclusives. When Sony announced that they were releasing a Playstation 4 Pro, many people started wondering whether it would be worth getting over the standard Playstation 4.

The Playstation 4 Versus The Playstation 4 Pro

Is the Playstation 4 Pro a massive upgrade from the standard Playstation 4? No. There are, however, a number of differences between the two consoles:
  • The PS 4 Pro can play games in 4K HDR, while the standard PS 4 can only play games in 1080 HD.
  • In terms of size, the PS 4 Pro is slightly bigger than the PS 4.
  • The PS 4 Pro has three USB ports, while the standard PS 4 has two.
  • With regards to weight, the PS 4 Pro is just over half a kilogram heavier than the standard PS 4.
  • Both have Blu-ray drives, but neither is capable of playing Blu-ray discs.
  • The PS 4 Pro comes standard with 1TB storage, while the standard PS 4 comes with either 500GB or 1TB storage.
  • Finally, the PS 4 Pro has a digital optical out port, while the standard PS 4 does not.
Ultimately, the PS 4 Pro is an incremental upgrade and not a complete replacement for the Playstation 4. Watch our video comparing the two below:

More About The Playstation 4 Pro

While the Playstation 4 Pro is able to output 4K gameplay, that’s largely dependent on two factors:
  • Whether you have a 4K TV.
  • Whether the game itself is 4K.
The addition of a third USB port is great if you’re contemplating getting Playstation VR, as you’ll be able to plug it into your console and not worry about unplugging something from the console. Ultimately, the Playstation 4 Pro is let down by the ecosystem needed in order to get the full benefit out of the device. Many games are not yet available in 4K. And, while you can play games in 1080p, why would you want to when 4K is an option? If you have the money available and are looking for a brand new gaming console, then the Playstation 4 Pro is the one to get as it will continue to improve as more game developers release games in 4K resolution and the cost of 4K TV’s decrease. If, however, you already have Playstation 4, then the differences between the two consoles are negligible and it’s not worth upgrading to the Pro version.
