South Africa has some of the most beautiful hiking trails. So why not put your boots and some sunscreen on and become one with nature. The Western Cape is definitely one of the top destinations to view the buds in spring. With a variety of hiking routes in this region, finding a good spot is not going to be a problem!

The Five Bay Trail

This trail is one of five that go through the West Coast towns of Paternoster and Jacobsbaai. This is a 2.5 day hike which is 38km long. It will take you along the shore and around the mountain where you can get great picturesque shots. The journey will take visitors past five adjoining scenic bays. The first day will be a 5km up and 5km down on Paternoster beach. The second day is a steady 17km from Paternoster to Trekoskraal. The third and final day, the hike continues from Trekoskraal, for 11km, towards Jacobsbaai. *For more information, click here.

The Sevilla Rock Art Trail

Located in the Cederberg mountains in Clanwilliam, the Sevilla Rock Art Trail takes guests on a historical journey. This is a short 5km hike along the Brannewyn River where you will visit nine different rock art painting sites. The San people inhabited the area many years ago and left rock art in the region. Now you can experience this heritage while enjoying the vibrant colours of various flora species that will illuminate your walk. The Swart Tobie Trail

This hike is very strenuous and for the more experienced climber. You will be hiking through the coastal town of Vredendal. The 92km hike will take approximately five days to complete. The nice thing is that your camping equipment will be transported for you so you won't have to worry about carrying that. This hike combines the beauty of the ocean with the tranquility of nature. How About A Nature Reserve Adventure? 

If hiking isn't your thing, why not take a trip to a nature reserve and enjoy the flowers from a stones throw away.

Wild Flower Route 

This flower route gives you the opportunity to see a blanket of beauty right in front of your eyes. The Namaqualand daisy is one of the most popular blooms that can be seem gracing the landscape with its proud presence. This region, which is located just 3 hours out of Cape Town in the Northern Cape, is home to over 3 500 different flower species. Hantam National Botanical Garden is a 6 200 hectare garden just outside the village of Nieuwoudtville. Known as the 'bulb capital of the world', its soils contain startling numbers of Geophytes. If this garden isn't for you, you can head back on to the N7 where you could visit the Namaqua National Park. Along your trip there, you could also pop into other hotspots that litter the route with beauty like The Skilpad Wild Flower Reserve at Kamieskroon. If you continue along the route, you will reach the spring-friendly town of Springbok. When you get there, you can also visit the Goegap Nature Reserve. *For more information, click here.

Postberg And The West Coast National Park

The Postberg Reserve is located inside the West Coast National Park in Langebaan, however it isn't open to the public all the time. The aim is to maintain it so that when spring comes, visitors get an untouched burst of nature at their fingertips. While you enjoy your surroundings, you might even come across a few visitors, possibly some Wildebeest and Zebra. You can even revel in the beauty a bit longer with a braai or picnic.
