The eighth instalment of Fast and Furious will be hitting cinemas this week. We took a look back at our favourite cars from the film series.
The Fast and Furious Film series is about to land its latest release in cinemas all over the country. With its cult fan following, the film is expected to generate as much attention as its predecessors. In celebration of the film's launch on SA shores, we thought we would take a look back at the film series. We picked out the most iconic cars of the series and had a look at their role in the film series. What were your favourites?
The undisputed leader of the car series is the Eclipse. Perhaps it was due to the fact that this was the car that introduced us to Paul Walker's character, Brian O’ Conner. The car was modified mostly for appearance purposes and these included a nonfunctional roof scoop and RoboCar Aero Armor Eclipse body kit. Also included were the ARP GT2 wing, 1997-spec Eclipse headlights, and Se7en 180 Axis Sport Tuning rims. Although we are not too sure what model is featured, the standard second generation Eclipse was a 210-hp, turbocharged, 2.0-liter in-line-four and all-wheel drive.
Who doesn’t absolutely worship this car? This is the car that Dom (Vin Diesel) built with his father in his youth in the story. The car is supposed to have 900hp with rear-wheel drive. It features a false BDS 8-71 Roots-style supercharger with chrome-plated plastic attached to the bonnet. Modifications made to the R/T include Nitrous Oxide, Catherine wheels, a stainless still mesh grille and a full roll cage.
The films famously feature two Nissan Skylines which are arguably the most recognisable cars in the film series. The 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-T R34 features in the 2009 film, while the 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R [R33] which featured in the 2001 film. The car boasts an RB26DETT 2.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve straight six sitting longitudinally in the engine bay that's force fed by twin turbos and officially rated at 280 hp.
This beast is featured in several of the films, including the first film, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift. The car has a sequential twin-turbo engine and near-50/50 weight distribution, making it perfect for street racing. It also came with a with a standard roll cage. Due to Diesel not being able to fit into the car with it, it had to be removed. The car had a stock twin-turbo 255hp engine with 4-bottle NOS system, stock suspension, and aluminium struts. Appearance modifications include VeilSide USA Aero body kit, RX-7 GT rear wing, Lexan headlight covers, and VeilSide rims.
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR
This is one of the featuring cars in Tokyo Drift and is cast as one of the films drifting heroes. The engine is a 2-liter turboed DOHC 4G63 with an RMR air intake system and downpipe. Front driveshafts were disconnected to make drifting an AWD car possible. Modifications to the appearance include an APR body kit and rear wing. APR Racing side mirrors, and Ray's Wheels G-Games 99B 19" rims.
